What Is Special About This Blog?
The power of action is unprecedented. The first step to action is often times recognizing that the world is full of problems. I hope to inspire people to be socially active and socially aware of what they care about - so long as they care about something.
“We are not going to put up with corruption, not going to put up with bad schools, not going to have to go to the emergency room for health care. It really gave people the determination to change things we had become sort of fatalistic about. We are not going to be like we were.” [...]
There is just too much to really unpack here with the immigration reform law in Arizona. I mean today, the Department of Justice presented a case against Arizona’s Law. This is big —- the Executive Branch challenging the law on the grounds that immigration reform is reserved for the federal government and is not for [...]
The life of Ted Kennedy makes me evaluate the true motivation and dedication I carry for some of the things I write about, the things I speak about. It is easy to champion a cause among like-minded people. What am I doing to inspire thought and dialogue on what I believe amongst the truly apathetic or non-supportive? What am I doing in the community to champion what others do not support or provide what others do not care about?
Hey readers! I am all about writing on the latest breaking news or political and social situations, but I would be remiss about not sharing with you opportunities as well that I think will be personally enriching for you. So I wanted to share this event with you! CAPITAL CAUSE POWER SESSION: Tips on Establishing [...]
Don’t be an unknown unknown. Don’t give anyone in a position of authority the justification of ignoring the needs of your community. Fill out the census and through our actions WE can begin the process to having our needs met, and our communities heard.
Or at least that the message he wants to send the state of Illinois and Americans tuning in by quoting the likes of Rudyard Kipling (If) and Lord Tennyson(Ulysses).
If this was a movie, it would be fantastic. Full of drama and tension and suspense, and theatric monologues and stands inspired by persistence, hubris, and a false sense of heroism.
Unfortunately, this is politics, and it is reality. The Illinois house has sent Blago into history by impeaching their first governor (that’s a surprise that this is the first governor they have impeached). Yet even in this near unanimour decision, what is Blago’s response?
Rather than bow out gracefully, and respect the predicament that these allegations has placed Illinois, Burris, and the state of politics of this nation, he not only states his complete innocence, but goes as far to say that this was politically motivated and the House is getting back at him for years of him struggling to fight for the people of Chicago and mad at his quest for expanding healthcare. See the video here.
Let me first reiterate the right of ALL individuals in criminal proceedings to be declared innocent until proven guilty. I respect his right to say not guilty until he is hoarse; he can even say it in as many languages as he so chooses – it may provide for good sound bites to the international community, and since he is acting anyway, might as well give the audience something.
But come on…the House is not impeaching you because you are the people’s champ! They are not upset at you because you kept pushing proposals to them on healthcare. They are not upset because you have done your job. Give it a rest. Blago, you have been labeled corrupt, on a national stage. It has not been the first time you have been investigated for corruption and abuse of power.
I am sorry Blago, but your 11 minute spill after the impeachment sounded like a lot of finger pointing and misses the point…you are bringing undue attention and discredit to the office of governor. Finger pointing only strengthens my belief that you have something to hide. You do not have to be a criminal or be guilty of any crimes to be impeached. You just have to not be living up to the expectations of your job. To use a phrase so diluted in its significance now by John McCain, “my friend”, you have been under investigation too many times for corruption. If it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck…
The only way I see the House making a political move in this instance is because they want to punish you in the only way that they have left because the public is crying out for an example or some accountability. For the Illinois House to sit on their hands would have been a political faux pas. Even though impeaching you was symbolic because you already made the tainted Senate appointment, it was still necessary.
So yes, this move is highly political. Even if you only had one day left in office and not a single bill left to sign, the Illinois Senate should still move with all haste to impeach you with their vote. A governor that does their job will not be doing it in a way that habitually raises questions about ethics and abuse of power over the tenure of both your terms. This is the impeachable offense. Not whether you are actually guilty of a crime.
So stop angering us all by your finger pointing, and your people’s champion message. I can assure you that the people do not want you to fight anymore and will feel just fine without a friend like you on their side.
Blago has announced an appointment for U.S. Senate…really?
I mean see my post from earlier about him being innocent until proven guilty;
However, it is bad form to make an appointment at this present time with so many questions and allegations in the air about his character.
Especially considering the charges and the fact that the corruption charges are specifically tied to the business of filling Obama’s empty Senate seat.
This is a political mess to add to Blago’s list of political corruption. It also gives more truth to the notion that Blago is in this game for numero uno.
First, nominating this guy in spite of what is going on around him is a major disrespect and disregard for the consensus building that any appointment made by Blago would not be considered legitimate or respected unless all of these allegations were proven to be erroneous. U.S. Senators, Illinois State government, many of them have said this.
Second, by nominating Roland Burris, he has effectively pulled Burris into his mess, whether Burris was one of the mystery candidates being considered or not. This is inconsiderate of Burris’s reputation and peace of mind. Burris may be a stand up guy, and not have a blemish on his 40 year record, as Representative Bobby Rush stated, it does not bode well for him to have someone accused of being corrupt handpick him from a crowd of qualified candidates. That is like picking an employee for a job who was recommended by the ex-CEO of Enron . The resume might be impeccable, but you have to wonder why the candidate was held in such high esteem by someone with bad judgment.
Third, it is clear that Blago is trying to take some wind out of the sails for those proponents looking to impeach him and start that process. One of the motivating reasons for wanting to impeach was so that they could prevent Blago from doing his job – appointing a replacement Senator. Now that he has already made the move, the focus is on what to do about the appointment, rather than what to do with Blago’s political career. He says he moved hastily to do this for the people of Illinois to have their representative, but it really was a move for himself.
With the appointment needing confirmation, it is unlikely that Burris will make it into the Senate, which is a shame for him, because he really might be highly qualified. I was personally put off to hear Bobby Rush then say “oh, let’s not forget, Obama leaving the Senate means we have no African Americans there.” What is this? I understand Bobby, that being a minority, it is really important to you and other minorities to see representation in government. Is arguing on the gruonds of inclusion and equality going to overshadow the political quagmire that accepting a corrupted governor’s appointment would bring? Don’t use inequality and racial issues in the wrong context please.
Rather than trying to guilt politicians by making them feel like they would be rejecting racial progress, maybe Rush should spend more time running around making statements that would make Blago guilty about being so brazen and selfish.
In an internal report released by the legal advisors of President-Elect Obama, it seems that they have found no activity or correpsondence out of the ordinary from Emanuel or personnel in his office and the office of Gov. Blago. All I can say is, it must be a great feeling to be able to attest [...]
So, let’s add this one as a continuation of an early post I had done on ethics. Blagojevich…you are still fighting, but a fish on a hook struggles just as hard, but doesn’t change the reality that they are caught and are going to the kitchen to be diced, sauteed, and served on a nice [...]
