Condolences to the families of Southern California which annually deals with the wildfires that scorch the land during this time of year.  The disaster that the fires bring really brings to light the need for support and aid in the area for the thousands of families displaced and with acute property damage and loss.

Luckily, the Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the job to provide that assistance.  According to their website, a Fire Management Assistance Grant has been awarded to the affected Santa Barbara area.  It is good to see the agency effectively monitoring the disasters occuring across the country and taking immediate steps to respond – avoiding the logistical nightmare that was Katrina.
I actually think it is interesting that there has been little mention of FEMA’s role in providing aide in these unfortunate circumstances.  When they weren’t on top of things, it was all across the news that FEMA was behind the curve.  Even I was a critic, watching how the wildfires of last year was handled.   However, I think it is important to point out when an agency has it together and is doing what it is supposed to.  I think the media has a habit of feeding in to our obsession of waiting for the worst news, or hearing about everything wrong with the world.
I think that it is especially important to mention the work FEMA is doing here because they have continually been working to improve their image after Katrina, and a number of embarrassing moments afterward.
I know that money could never replace what many of these families had in the area, but I applaud FEMAs seamless fusion of aide into the area.  Even if breaking news coverage of these wildfires focus on the amazingly destructive nature of these flames or the saddening statistics of property damage, one person recognizes that FEMA is there to fulfil its mission in the midst of this.
