If President Obama announces that he supports states creating their own stringent auto emissions criteria it can reverse a policy set in place by Bush and can also create interesting dynamics amongst environmentalists and automakers.
Environmentalists will be happy. It is no secret that automobiles are responsible for a sizable portion of greenhouse gases in our atmosphere. At present there are at least 17 states that want to impose stricter standards on their autos which will deifnitely have a positive effect on the environment and in reducing these emissions.
On the other hand, the auto industry can’t be happy. Especially not in light of the recession we are in and the declining sales the American auto market has seen over the years. This just adds to the marketability of foreign cars and the potential problems that the auto industry can face.
Obama’s commitment to campaign promises looks to prove good for environmentalists but bad for the auto industry. The auto industry will undoubtedly have to make modifications of their design to meet standards – modifications that will cost money that they do not have.
Hopefully in meeting the demands of the environment and the need for greater efforts to curb destructive greenhouse gases, the government will also remain vigilant on providing an alternative to meet the needs of the ailing car industry.
